His father, Gordon James Ramsay, was born November 8, 1966, in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland. His family relocated to England when he was five, and he was raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. He is the second of four children. When he was a child, Ramsay’s family moved constantly due to his father’s aspirations and professional setbacks.

Ramsay’s father was often violent and alcoholic. When he was 16, he moved out of his family and into his own apartment. During his teenage years, Ramsay played football/soccer quite well, but a knee injury cut short his playing career. Ramsay developed an interest in cooking by this time, so at 19, he enrolled in North Oxfordshire Technical College’s Hotel Management program.

After working as a commis chef at the Wroxton House Hotel in the mid-1980s, Ramsay became the head chef at the Wickham Arms in the mid-1990s. After working in a series of restaurants in London, he finally landed a job working for Harvey’s notoriously temperamental chef.

As a result of White’s rage and bullying and violence, Ramsay left Harvey’s for 2 years and ten months. After working for Albert Roux and Le Gavroche in Mayfair, where he met Jean-Claude Breton, now his maitre d’hotel at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Ramsay decided to study French cuisine.

In the French Alpine resort Hotel Diva, Roux invited Ramsay to work as his number two after working at Le Gavroche for a year. Following this, Ramsay spent three years in France working with Michelin-starred chefs Guy Savoy and Joel Robuchon.

The chef returned to London after taking a year off as a private chef on a yacht and was given the position of head chef at La Tante Claire in Chelsea under Pierre Koffman, a three-Michelin starred chef. After a few months, Ramsay won his first Michelin star at the Rossmore, which he renamed Aubergine and won his second Michelin star 14 months later.
