We’re back with another MARCA in English live blog, this time covering Manchester City vs Real Madrid’s Champions League quarter-finals second leg at the Etihad Stadium.
In a six-goal thriller at the Bernabeu, the two teams battled to a draw last week.
The winner of Wednesday’s match will advance to the semi-finals. In spite of slipping by Liverpool and Arsenal over the weekend, Manchester City enter the match full of confidence. They are unbeaten in their last 27 matches across all competitions and are on course to defend their Premier League title.
Real Madrid have, however, achieved extraordinary feats in the Champions League under Carlo Ancelotti. They are unbeaten in the competition this year entering Wednesday’s match.
Additionally, they have won all four of their away games by one goal, along with a 15-game unbeaten streak. Reference

Pre-match comments by Ancelotti
In his interview with Movistar from the Etihad, Ancelotti said: “Nerves always accompany a match, but so does confidence, you have to show confidence to your team and be clear about what you need them to do.”.
“I have repeated the lineup, we’re putting Nacho who always does well, he has experience in these types of matches, and we’re going out with enough confidence to play a great match, that’s what we have to do. Not a good match, a great match.”
Vinicius and Rodrygo’s positions: “It doesn’t change much from the first leg. We have to take into account the opponent, who may play a different game, with more pressure, so we have to manage everything well. Transitions, ball handling, we have to evaluate all these things.”
Last year, Madrid suffered a lot in the first minutes: “We changed something there; taking into account what we experienced, we have to press a little more up top”.
The young players feel a little more pressure, and the veterans are always the same. We’ve spent quiet moments, preparing for the match, all of them are plugged in.”
Stones is not in the starting XI
Stones won’t start tonight’s match. Guardiola switches to Dias and Akanji in the center of defense, De Bruyne replaces Kovacic, and Ederson replaces Stefan Ortega as goalkeeper.
Supporting Tchouameni
Due to suspension, Aurelien Tchouameni will not be able to play in tonight’s match.
At home, Manchester City is a force
Manchester City hasn’t lost a Champions League match at the Etihad Stadium since September 19, 2018. Manchester will be a major challenge for Real Madrid tonight.
Manchester United have played 30 European Cup matches at their stadium since then, with 28 wins and two draws. A thrashing like that occurred last season for Real Madrid.
Guardiola’s team defeated Los Blancos 4-0 in the semifinals, sending them to their second Champions League final.
Real Madrid’s XI has no surprises
Nacho replaces suspended Tchouaméni. There is only one change in Real Madrid’s eleven as they aim to reach the Champions League semi-finals.
Possible lineups for Manchester City vs Real Madrid
Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden, who were both substituted in the first leg with knocks, both made the Manchester City squad.
Kyle Walker and Nathan Ake joined them, and the quartet is expected to be available on Wednesday. After missing the match against Luton, it remains to be seen if John Stones will play.
David Alaba and Thibaut Courtois remain out for Real Madrid. In the weekend’s match against Mallorca, Eder Militao started after returning from a knee injury.
Nacho Fernandez is expected to start alongside Antonio Rudiger against Man City, with the Brazilian expected to start on the bench. The suspension of Aurelien Tchouameni has been lifted.
The predicted Manchester City XI is: Ederson; Walker, Dias, Stones, Gvardiol; Silva, Rodri, De Bruyne; Foden, Haaland, Doku
XI predicted by Real Madrid: Lunin; Carvajal, Nacho, Rudiger, Mendy; Valverde, Camavinga, Kroos; Bellingham; Rodrygo, Vinicius Jr.
