For the men’s singles draw, the cut-off ranking was 99, but Nadal, Marin Cilic, Denis Shapovalov, Kei Nishikori, and Kwon Soonwoo qualified with protected rankings. In 2024, the 14-time Roland Garros champion has only appeared in the Brisbane International and reached the quarterfinals. What is Protected Ranking System?

Top-level players can return to play using special/protected rankings after an absence

Injuries that cause extended absences. Men’s rankings are determined by the player’s average ranking over three months after an injury. The player can use this provision for nine months or nine tournaments after returning, whichever comes first, and it extends to twelve months if absent for more than a year. A woman’s ranking remains the same as it was at the time of injury, and she can participate in eight tournaments per year, or 12 if she misses more than a year.
