The History of National Banana Day

A banana is a berry fruit that grows in fingerlike clusters, hanging down from a banana tree. It is a popular fruit everywhere, irrespective of its variety. The banana fruit is a favorite of many people. We also love bananas. Besides their softness and sweetness, bananas have some health benefits that make them special. They are excellent sources of vitamins, carbohydrates, amino acids, and fats.

There are over 100 billion bananas produced worldwide each year, of which over a hundred billion are eaten as a meal when peeled, as well as in other forms of food such as banana bread, pies, chips, cakes, muffins, and smoothies.

It is difficult to pinpoint a particular year when National Banana Day was first observed. Around 327 B.C., Arab traders brought bananas westward from India and other Asian countries. The fruit spread through Africa before being brought to the New World by explorers and missionaries. The large-scale banana industry began in 1834 when bananas gained popularity and demand. But, notably, bananas gained popularity on American shores in 1865. Lorenzo Dow Baker founded the Boston Fruit Company to import bananas into America.
